Poughkeepsie Police Injured During Scuffle

POUGHKEEPSIE – Two Poughkeepsie City Police officers were injured as they apprehended youths who were involved in an incident just before 9 p.m. Friday. An innocent, uninvolved resident was knocked to the ground and causing lacerations and loss of several teeth when three youths who were fleeing police ran into him. He was taken to the hospital by Mobile Life Support Services ambulance.

Two injured officers were treated and released at a local hospital, but will remain out of work pending further medical evaluations.

Police were initially called to a reported fight in progress and possible home invasion on Thompson Street.

As officers arrived, several juveniles had fled the area on bicycles.

Four juveniles on bikes were located and detained at Main and Clinton streets. A victim of the incident identified the youths as being involved and they were taken to the city’s juvenile aid bureau.

During this investigation, one officer remained on Thompson Street when other youths came along. Additional police were called to the scene and that is when the three juveniles fled striking the uninvolved person.

One of the apprehended youths was charged with felony attempted burglary and coercion. The others were released to parents or guardians pending review and evaluation by the Dutchess County Attorney’s Office.

Officers from the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department’s uniform division, detectives and the Neighborhood Recovery Unit investigated. Hyde Park Police assisted by providing a Spanish speaking officer. The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with calls for service during the incident.
