NEWBURGH – It was in mid-April that a $200,000 state grant was announced for the SNUG program to resume in the City of Newburgh. SNUG is GUNS spelled backwards.
The program is aimed at community intervention with the police department to detect potentially violent acts before they happen and stem violent behavior before it occurs.
RECAP, the Regional Economic Community Action Program, will administer the program, but the money has not come down from Albany yet and that is of concern to Mayor Torrance Harvey.
“We were hoping to get SNUG up and going before the summer ended, but here we are quickly approaching the month of August and at best, September or October we should have it,” Harvey said.
The City of Poughkeepsie has a similar SNUG program administered by Family Services.
