Drake Tops Marist On Family Weekend

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist football team dropped a Pioneer Football League game to Drake by a score of 41-17 on Saturday before 3,918 fans at Tenney Stadium on Family Weekend.

Ian Corwin’s 22-yard touchdown pass to Devin Cates with 10:43 left in the first quarter got Drake on the scoreboard first.

With six seconds left in the period, Corwin tossed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Shane Feller.

The Bulldogs led 13-0 after the first 15 minutes.

A 28-yard field goal by red-shirt freshman Luke Paladino got Marist on the scoreboard at the 10:11 mark of the second quarter, and capped a 13-play, 65-yard drive.

Late in the second quarter, Drake scored two touchdowns in a 24-second span. Drew Lauer scored on a four-yard run with 35 seconds left until halftime. Then, on Marist’s next play from scrimmage, Jeran Proctor returned an interception 54 yards to the Marist 21. Two plays later, Corwin’s four-yard touchdown pass to Matt Hartlieb gave Drake a 27-3 lead going to the locker room.

Red-shirt sophomore Austin Day’s 39-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Olivencia with 8:43 left in the third quarter cut Marist’s deficit to 27-10.

Corwin’s fourth touchdown pass of the day, a 29-yard score to Steven Doran, put Drake in front 34-10 with 1:06 left in the third quarter. Caden Meis then added a 56-yard touchdown with 11:22 remaining.

Marist closed out the scoring on a 34-yard touchdown pass from red-shirt sophomore Luke Strnad to red-shirt junior Cade McNaughton with 6:56 remaining.

Marist travels to the west coast to face PFL foe San Diego on Saturday, Oct. 5.
