Heitmann’s Overtime Goal Lifts Vassar Over RIT

POUGHKEEPSIE – Junior Hawkins Barratt Heitmann scored six minutes into the first overtime period to give the Vassar men’s soccer team the 2-1 win against RIT on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Brewers clinchthe third third in the Liberty League Tournament and move to 9-7-1 overall, while RIT slips to 6-9-1 and 4-5-0 in the conference.

The Tigers led 1-0 until the 87th minute before sophomore Eamon Geraghty netted the penalty kick goal. RIT had one final shot with a minute to play, but the Brewers backline knocked it away to force the overtime.

Heitmann took the first shot attempt in overtime, but RIT goalkeeper Gaurav Cheema deflected it away. Quinn Tunnell then fired a shot high off the rebound. A Tigers’ foul gave Heitmann the free kick attempt where he shot the ball into the low left corner at 96:01.

The RIT goal came at the 76th minute when Nate Verso launched a shot from 20-yards for the score. In total, the Brewers outshot the Tigers 14-6 and held a 5-4 corner advantage.
Eric Wnorowski recorded one save, while Cheema had eight.
