Marist Emerges Victorious Over the Gaels

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist men’s basketball team never trailed in an 83-73 home victory over Iona in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play on Sunday at McCann Arena. The Red Foxes led by as much as 31.

Jordan Jones scored Marist’s first six points, which came in the game’s first 3:03.

A 7-0 Marist run, punctuated by a scoop-and-score from Michael Cubbage, gave Marist a 15-8 lead and forced an Iona timeout at the 13:01 mark.

Marist then went on an 11-0 run to expand its lead to 26-11 at the 10:51 mark.

The Red Foxes led by as much as 17 in the first 20 minutes, and took a 43-32 lead to the locker room.

Marist outscored Iona 35-15 in the first 13:46 of the second half. Tyler Sagl’s basket and two made free throws following an intentional foul gave Marist a 78-47 advantage with 6:14 to play.

Over a span of 3:12 late in the second half, Iona reeled off 17 consecutive points. The Gaels twice trailed by as little as nine in the game’s final minute, but drew no closer.

Up next, Marist takes on Manhattan for the first time this season on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at McCann Arena.
