Balanced Offense Powers Vassar Past Bard

By Amie Canfield
POUGHKEEPSIE – Powered by points from every player on the bench, the Vassar College women’s basketball team posted a 93-42 win over Bard College in Liberty League action on Saturday. The win moves the Brewers to 12-5 overall and 8-2 in league play. VC is now tied with RPI – who beat Ithaca today – for first-place in the conference. The Raptors moved to 5-12 and 0-10 in the Liberty League.

Pacing the Brewers was senior captain and center Sophie Nick as she poured in 21 points, seven rebounds, a block and two steals in just 18 minutes. Junior forward Natalie Pettirossi added 16 points, eight boards, two assists and a game-best four steals, while classmate and guard Ryan DeOrio posted 13 points. Sophomore guard Sarah Gillooly came off the bench to record 10 points, while rookie Emily Tincher added six points and a pair of blocks to lead all players.

For the Raptors, sophomore guard Jess Rylander notched 10 points to go along with three rebounds and an assist. Classmates Olivia Couture and Christina Kiser each added eight points, while senior Caleigh DeCaprio had six points and two assists.

The Brewers held a 42-23 advantage after the opening two quarters of action and continued to dominate into the third stanza. Powered by five points from DeOrio and four from Nick, the Brewers went on an 11-0 run to grab a 53-23 advantage with 7:27 to play. Bard tried to pull back into the contest, but another 11-0 run from Vassar made it a 41-point (68-27) edge with 1:32 left in the quarter.

Up 71-29, Vassar opened fourth quarter play with another 11-0 drive, paced by back-to-back jumpers from DeOrio on the tail end, but Bard found a rhythm with 4:30 on the clock as freshman Marissa Munsell drained a three pointer, quickly followed by a jumper from Couture off a steal by Bri Alphonso-Gibbs and then a layup in the paint from DeCaprio to make it 84-38 at 3:15.

Despite that momentum, the lead by Vassar was just too much as it added more points down the stretch for the victory.

Both teams are back in Liberty League action next Friday as Vassar travels to Clarkson, while Bard is at St. Lawrence. Both games are scheduled for a 5:30pm tip-off.
