Jacobson Co-Sponsored Ban on PFAS

ALBANY – Assemblymember Jonathan Jacobson (D-104) cosponsored A4739, a bill banning Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) chemicals in food packaging. The bill was signed into law by Governor Cuomo on December 2, 2020.

Jacobson said, “For decades, PFAS chemicals were used for a range of products, including nonstick cookware and a variety of food and drink packaging. Today, we have a greater understanding of the health hazards these chemicals pose to humans, including increased risk of cancer.

“Last year, the State banned PFAS chemicals from fire-fighting foam, which was leaching these contaminants into groundwater. The City of Newburgh was forced to change its water source after Washington Lake was determined to have been contaminated by PFAS chemicals from firefighting foam used at Stewart Airport.

“We need to ensure that PFAS chemicals are not in our drinking water. We must also ensure these chemicals are not used in our food packaging. This law eliminates one more possibility of PFAS chemicals endangering our health.”
