Poughkeepsie Bids Farewell to Former Fire Chief

POUGHKEEPSIE – City of Poughkeepsie firefighters joined with family and friends of former Poughkeepsie Fire Chief Dennis McComb to mourn his death on Tuesday. The chief passed away on December 16, 2020. He was 81-years-old.

The well-respected chief passed away at his home in Rotunda West, Florida. His wife of 61 years, Priscilla Rae Hawley McComb, survives at home.

McComb was a staple in Poughkeepsie. In addition to his career with the fire department, he was the owner of McComb’s Stationery Store which was at 271 Main Street in Poughkeepsie.

McComb spent 20 years with the Poughkeepsie fire department. Starting as a firefighter, he rose through the ranks with promotions to the positions of lieutenant and deputy chief before being named chief of the department.

After retiring, he relocated to the Outer Banks in North Carolina before settling in Rotunda West, Florida.

A funeral procession left the William G. Miller Funeral Home, led by a Poughkeepsie fire engine, and arrived at St. Mary’s Church for the funeral service. Both active and retired firefighters served as the color guard for the ceremony. McComb was buried in the family plot at St. Peter’s Cemetery.
