World Down Syndrome Day is Celebrated

By Jennifer L. Warren

NEWBURGH – Sunday, March 21, marked World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD.) People all over celebrated this special day by wearing mismatched, colorful socks- symbolic of the extra chromosome D.S. People possess.

Town of Newburgh resident, Rose Lisi, a long-time advocate for D.S. as well as mother of Valoree Lisi, organized a symbolic three mile walk for that chromosome at Thomas Bull Memorial Park.

Here, amid a crystal blue, sunny sky, Lisi, along with close family members and friends proudly completed the walk while spreading critical awareness on a day that has been observed by the United Nations since 2012. The date for WDSD is slated for the 21st day of the third month, chosen to reveal the uniqueness of the triplication ( trisomy) of the 21st Chromosome which causes Down Syndrome.
