Milam’s Walk-Off Homer Gives Softball Sweep

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist softball team swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader from Rider on Saturday at Gartland Field.

Backed by a one-hitter from Calista Phippen and solid contributions up and down the lineup, the Red Foxes won 10-0 in five innings in game one. Ali Milam’s walk-off two-run homer capped a three-run seventh in Marist’s 7-5 triumph in game two.

Game One Summary
Marist 10, Rider 0 (5 inn.) – W: Calista Phippen (2-4), L: Debra Jones (6-7)
Marist opened the scoring with a seven-run second inning in which the Red Foxes sent 11 runners to the plate. Sam Freeland had a two-run double in the inning.

The Red Foxes added three runs in the third, including two on a double by Miah McDonald.
Calista Phippen needed just 55 pitches to throw a one-hitter. Phippen faced just hitter over the minimum. She struck out two and did not walk anyone.

McDonald finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Shea Walsh was 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Game Two Summary
Marist 7, Rider 5 – W: Nicole Teague (1-1) L: Anna-Marie Groskritz (4-4)
Chaela Crowder’s sacrifice fly brought home Kelsey Marigliano with the game’s first run in the top of the first.

Kaley Coltrain’s three-run homer gave Marist a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the frame.
Rider countered with four runs in the top of the second. Elena Gonzalez drew a bases-loaded walk, Lani Moreno had a two-run single, and Crowder had an RBI single.

Marist cut its deficit to 5-4 when Julia Blarr drove in Walsh in the fourth.

The score remained 5-4 until the bottom of the seventh. Sam Freeland singled up the middle with one out. With the Red Foxes down to their final out, Coltrain’s single brought home Freeland. Milam then drove a 1-1 pitch over the wall in dead center to give Marist a walk-off win.

Coltrain finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs.

Walsh, Freeland, and Hailee Jantorno had two hits apiece.

Crowder finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Rider.

Nicole Teague pitched 5.2 innings of relief for the victory.

Anna-Marie Groskritz pitched a complete game for Rider and struck out five.

Marist returns to action on Wednesday with a MAAC doubleheader at Siena. First pitch of game one is set for 2 p.m.
