Vassar Women’s Tennis Shoulders Tough Loss

SARATOGA SPRINGS – The Vassar women’s tennis team shouldered a tough 7-2 loss at Skidmore in Liberty League action on Saturday morning at the Williamson Sports Center.

The Thoroughbreds move to 5-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in league play to secure the top-seed in the upcoming Liberty League playoffs.

The Brewers shoulder their first loss of the season and are now 4-1 overall and 4-1 in conference action. They await several other matches to finish in league play, but have already secured a berth in the tournament.

Doubles play got things going and the home team came out on top by a 2-1 margin. From the second flight, Lily Feldman and Chanhtel Thongphok combined for an 8-3 victory against Vassar juniors Melina Stavropoulos and Sara Ehnstrom. Skidmore picked up a second point from three as Sofia Carlsson and Audrey Soohoo bested Brewers junior Nicole Pihlstrom and rookie Chikasi Eze.

Vassar earned its doubles point from one as rookie Sofie Shen partnered with junior Cara Kizilbash for an 8-6 win against Risa Fukushige and Maya Lal.

Singles action saw Skidmore earn wins in five of the six flights. At one, Fukushige picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win against Stavropoulos. From three, Feldman earned a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win against Kizilbash. At four, Thongphok posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ehnstrom, while five saw rookie Katherine Almquist defeat Pihlstrom, 6-0, 6-0. Carlsson then wrapped up Skidmore’s scoring at six with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Eze.

The Brewers singles point came from three as Shen improved to 5-0 on the season with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Lal.
