Brewers Down Dutchwomen in Scrimmage

SCHENECTADY – The Vassar field hockey team played in its first competition since 2019 and defeated Union 2-1 at the Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium on Saturday. Senior Grace Amell scored the opening goal in the first quarter, and then first-year Kelsey O’Connell netted the second.

The Brewers controlled the pace early on and most of the action took place at the Union net. Vassar scored first following a corner. Amell inserted and first-year Maggie Werner made the first shot attempt that was stopped by the goalie. Amell collected the rebound in the corner of the net and chipped the shot in at 12:28.

O’Connell scored following a scramble in front of the Dutchwomen goalie. The ball slipped past, and O’Connell only needed to slightly redirect to score her first collegiate goal at 9:50.

The Dutchwomen scored at 2:22 in the second quarter after the Brewers were unable to clear the ball out of their circle. Union slipped the ball through the defense to an open forward who shot in to the open net.

Neither side would score in the second half, which gave Vassar the victory.
