Memorial Day Tribute Held at St. George’s

NEWBURGH – On Sunday, May 30, 2021 the gates of St. George’s Cemetery were open so that members of the Newburgh Joint Memorial Day Parade Committee could conduct a ceremony honoring the war dead.

All were invited to attend the brief service to honor those who paid the ultimate price. On Saturday, May 29 flags were placed at the graves of veterans at rest in St. George’s Cemetery. Flags had been supplied by the John T. Kenney Post 973 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Catherine Costello of the St. George’s Cemetery Committee was most appreciative. “We have recruited volunteers from among our parishioners and friends to assist in the tribute,” she stated.

Costello continued, “We are very grateful to VFW Post 973 representative David McTamaney, a longtime friend of the cemetery for recently donating and hoisting a new flag to fly over the cemetery entrance monument dedicated to soldiers, sailors, and marines of all wars.”
