NAACP Statement on Voting Rights Meeting

On July 8, 2021 Derrick Johnson, president and CEO of the NAACP, released the following statement after his meeting with President Biden and Vice President Harris on Voting Rights:
“American democracy is built on the idea of one person, one vote. We the people, all people. Not just the rich but also the poor. Not just white, but inclusive of all. The assault against democracy unfolding in states across the nation ignores and shatters the centuries of progress for fairness at the ballot box. One thing is clear, if our votes were not important, they would not be fighting tooth and nail to suppress them.

“In our meeting today, President Biden and Vice President Harris made it clear that the administration will continue to fight to protect our most fundamental right, the right to vote. The NAACP will continue to engage with the President and the Vice President to ensure that all voices are heard.

“Ultimately, Congress must act with great urgency to pass significant legislation that protects this sacred right. Time is of the essence.

“We cannot forget that justice is an ongoing struggle, and democracy, an ongoing fight.”
