Free Mammograms

Dear Editor,

Breast cancer screening can save lives. That’s why the Affordable Care Act makes breast cancer screening and counseling free. All health plans must cover these benefits at no cost.
“More than 40,000 women die from breast cancer every year. It’s the second leading cause of women’s death from cancer,” explained Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation Executive Director, Pari Forood.

“If breast cancer is found at an early stage, there is a 98% chance of survival. Mammograms are the best way to find cancer when it is too small to feel.”

The odds of long-term survival drop to 25% if breast cancer is found in a later stage when it has spread outside the breast. “If October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month reminds us of anything, it is that it is worth the time to take advantage of free screenings for everyone,” she added.
