Marist Volleyball Prevails Over Rider

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist volleyball team won a five-set match against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Rider on Saturday at McCann Arena. The Red Foxes prevailed 14-25, 25-22, 25-20, 15-25, 15-13.

A 5-0 run midway through the first set allowed the Broncs to take control, and they won 25-14. Rider hit .462 in the first set, while Marist hit -.103.

Rider led early in the second set. Marist closed the gap, and then took the lead for good with a 6-0 run which turned a 16-15 deficit into a 21-16 advantage.

Marist never trailed in the third set. Although the set was tied at 15 apiece, the Red Foxes used a 5-0 spurt to take control. This run included two kills apiece from Sasha van der

Merwe and Jordan Newblatt. Marist hit .459 in the third set.
Marist built a 9-6 lead in the fourth set, but Rider countered with a 14-3 run as the Broncs sent the match to a decisive fifth set.

Rider scored the first three points of the fifth set, and led 12-10 before the Red Foxes scored four points in a row. Newblatt had a kill and two aces in this run. Rider fought off one match point, but van der Merwe ended the match with a kill.
