Fisher Has Impressive Night in Victory Over Iona

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist women’s basketball team earned its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory of the season on Monday night with a 61-49 triumph over Iona at McCann Arena.

Iona’s Juana Camilion scored the game’s first two points 28 seconds in, but Marist answered with an 11-0 run as the Gaels were held scoreless for 6:09.

Iona then held Marist scoreless for nearly four-and-a-half minutes, but Emma Wax beat the first quarter buzzer with a shot from just over the halfcourt line. Wax’s three gave the Red Foxes a 14-7 lead after 10 minutes.

Kiara Fisher scored seven straight Marist points as the Red Foxes extended their advantage to as much as 17 in the second quarter. Marist led 29-17 at halftime.

A three-pointer by Juilanna Bonilla with 1:25 left in the third quarter gave the Red Foxes a 21-point lead, their highest of the game. Marist led 48-29 after 30 minutes.

A 9-2 Iona run cut the Gaels’ deficit to 11 with 1:16 remaining, but they came no closer as the Red Foxes earned a 12-point victory.

Marist led for 39:00 of game time.

Fisher led all scorers with 17 points. She also contributed six assists, four steals, and three rebounds.

Trinasia Kennedy had 10 points, five rebounds, and three assists.

Zaria Shazer had eight points and a team-best seven rebounds.

Shyan Mwai led Iona with 12 points.

Marist held Juana Camilion, Iona’s leading scorer, to seven points on 3-for-11 shooting.

Camiliion also contributed game highs of seven assists and four steals, and tied Shazer for the game high with seven rebounds.

Marist held a 28-16 edge in points in the paint.

Marist shot 5-for-11 (.455) from three-point range, and Iona shot 8-for-25 (.320) from deep.

Marist is now 3-7 overall and 1-1 in the MAAC.

Marist will host Canisius on Thursday, Dec. 30. Tip-off at McCann Arena is set for 7 p.m.
