Vassar Women’s Tennis Wins Spring Opener

POUGHKEEPSIE – It was a solid opening start to the 2022 campaign for the Vassar women’s tennis team, which defeated Drew University by a 9-0 margin in match action on Saturday at Walker Field House. The win moves the Brewers to 2-0 as they prepare to play the heart of their season this spring. The Rangers are now 1-2 overall.

Doubles action got things going as the third pairing of rookie Elyse Duley and senior captain Cara Kizilbash recoreded an 8-0 win over junior Danielle DelRosso and sophomore Taylor Dombalis. From two, rookie Macey Dowd and junior Tatum Blalock powered their way to an 8-0 win against junior Sanne Bloemendaal and senior Kate Gangi, while the Brewers took the 3-0 lead from one as senior captain Melina Stavropoulos and sophomore Sofie Shen bested sophomore Melina Chrstodoulou and rookie Mary Kalorin, 8-1.

In singles action, it was another straight sweep. Blalock won from the first flight with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Christodoulou. Shen picked up the win at two, besting Kalorin in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, while three saw Dowd a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Bloemendaal. Stavropoulos was a straight set winner (6-0, 6-0) from four over Dombalis, while five saw Kizilbash defeat Gangi, 6-0, 6-1. Wrapping up the singles action was Duley, who defeated rookie Courtney Bresler, 6-0, 6-1.

Vassar returns to the courts on Friday, February 25 at 6:30pm when it faces Liberty League-foe Bard at Cross Courts in Wappingers Falls.
