Marist Softball Defeated Twice in North Carolina

WILMINGTON, NC – On day two of tournament play at UNC Wilmington, Marist faced Bucknell and re-matched host UNCW. The Red foxes lost a close game in eight innings, 2-1, against Bucknell. Marist then lost 9-0 to UNCW in five innings to fall to 0-4 on the season.

Game One
There were no scoring in the first two innings. Marist’s Shea Walsh hit a double in the bottom of the first but was left on third base.

With bases loaded in the top of the third inning, a wild pitch gave Bucknell a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, after a single up the middle by junior Sam Freeland, Hailee Jantorno rounded third base and was thrown out at home plate to keep the score 1-0.
There was no scoring in the fourth or fifth innings. Both teams had 1-2-3 fifth innings.
In the bottom of the sixth, Walsh hit a triple and was able to score on a sacrifice fly from Sam Freeland, tying the game 1-1.

The game went into extra innings with each team starting the inning with a runner on second base. Bucknell scored in the top of the eighth inning on a sac fly and held on for a 2-1 win.

Kiley Myers pitched seven innings for Marist, allowing four hits and one run. She had seven strikeouts and three walks. Freshman Maddie Pleasants came into the game in the top of the eighth inning and allowed one run and a walk facing four batters.

Walsh went 2-for-4 with a double and triple, and was the only Red Fox to score.

Game Two
In the first inning, Caroline Baratta hit a single up the middle. Kaley Coltrain drew a walk and Hannah Brock singled down the left field line to load up the bases with two outs, but the Red Foxes were unable to score.

In the bottom of the first inning UNCW had three hits and three runs. Senior Janel Gamache hit a two-run RBI single down the left sideline and reached third base on a throwing error by Marist. Gamache later scored, giving UNCW a 3-0 lead after one inning.

In the bottom of the second, Anna Knox drew a walk for UNCW, then stole second base, and scored on an RBI single from Arial Pearce.

In the bottom of the third inning UNCW loaded up the bases with two hits and a batter hit by a pitch. Morgan Britt hit a sac fly to give the Seahawks a 5-0 lead.

UNCW increased their lead to 9-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Anna Knox’s stole her second base of the game and scored on another RBI single from Pearce. Gamache then hit a three-run homer to close out the scoring.
