Vassar Brewers Defeat Mount Holyoke College

POUGHKEEPSIE – A top to bottom effort in the lineup helped pace the Vassar College women’s tennis team to a 9-0 win over Mount Holyoke College on Sunday afternoon at the Walker Field House. The Brewers move to 4-0 on the season, while the Lyons are now 0-2 overall.

Doubles action saw the second flight team of junior Tatum Blalock and rookie Macey Dowd post a strong 8-0 victory over MHC junior Shweta Kiran Cavale and senior Chisato Kimura. From three, senior captain Cara Kizilbash and rookie Elyse Duley gave the Brewers the 2-0 lead with an 8-1 victory over rookie Claudia Gonzalez-Vazquez and senior Nikki Cheng.

The Brewers made it a 3-0 edge from one, concluding doubles action as senior captain Melina Stavropoulos and sophomore Sofie Shen bested senior Annissa Aamoum and rookie Annika Chai.

Shifting to singles play, the Brewers posted a win from four as Stavropoulos defeated Cheng in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Vassar sealed the match win from five soon after as Kizilbash posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kimura.

Shen was then the victor at two, defeating Cavale by a 6-0, 6-1 margin, followed by a win by Dowd at three as she defeated Aamoum, 6-1, 6-1.

Blalock was next off court, recording a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Chai from the first position, and the match was closed out by Duley, who defeated Gonzalez-Vazquez by a 6-0, 6-0 margin at six.

Vassar is now idle until March 7 as it heads to California for its spring training trip. The Brewers open the stretch on the West Coast against California Lutheran at 3pm.
