Army Shuts Out Lehigh For Series Sweep

WEST POINT – Army West Point Softball (15-23, 6-1) picked up it’s second Patriot League series sweep, after shutting out Lafayette (6-28,1-11) 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Jolie Duong (7-8) picked up the win in the circle and recorded her third shutout of the season. The Firstie allowed just four hits in the shutout not allowing any for four straight innings. Ellie Caldwell was stellar at second base making two huge defensive plays for the Black Knights.

The game was a battle of the pitchers as neither team was able to score until the fifth inning. Lafayette recorded the first hits of the game in the first and the second inning. Duong retired the next six batters to keep the Leopards off the board.

In the bottom of the fifth Army recorded the first runs of the game. It started with an error on the Leopards’ second baseman to get one runner aboard. Brook Mitchell hit an infield single bunt to get runners on first and second. The two quickly moved into scoring position due to a passed ball. Julianna LaRusso fired off a single to third to bring in one run for the Black Knights. With runners on the corners, Kayla Edwards put the ball in play to drive in one run for Army, making the score 2-0. The final run of the frame was scored off a triple by Leila Hurst. Army scored three runs on three hits and one error.

The two teams were quiet in the sixth inning keeping the score at 3-0 in Army’s favor. Lafayette made one last play in the top of the seventh with a single up the middle. The next three batters were retired to secure the 3-0 for the Black Knights.
