Fare Hike in the Works For Newburgh Cabbies

NEWBURGH – The fare that taxi drivers in the City of Newburgh can charge is $5, but that may increase soon.

Cabbies have asked the city council for permission to double that given the rising costs of operation, but Mayor Torrance Harvey said council members have informally agreed upon a more modest rate hike.

“The council has agreed to go $7; that’s not official. Some council members wanted a little higher – $8 a fare within the city limits, but I think unanimously I think everyone can agree to a $7 fee,” he said.

Harvey said the city has also cracked down on unlicensed cabbies with 90 percent of those operating in the city now registered and following the municipal regulations.
