Mount Student-Athletes Honored At Awards Ceremony

NEWBURGH – Following a year absence due to the cancellation of the 2020 Fall Season and 2020-21 Winter seasons, the Mount Saint Mary College Athletic Department honored its student-athletes for a successful 2021-22 year Tuesday night. In addition to the department awards, the newest class of Chi Alpha Sigma was inducted by Chapter President Patrick Shea.

Chi Alpha Sigma is the first, and only, national scholar-athlete society to honor those four-year collegiate student-athletes who have excelled in both the classroom and in athletic competition.

Chi Alpha Sigma recognizes college student-athletes who participate in a sport at the varsity intercollegiate level, achieve junior academic standing or higher after their fifth full time semester, and earn a 3.4 or higher cumulative grade point average. Student-athletes who compete for a collegiate club team are also eligible if the club team is overseen by the athletics department at the local chapter.

The Department instituted four new honors for the 2022 ceremony, including the Most Valuable Professor (M.V.P), Royal Megaphone (Super Fan), Student-Worker and Sports Medicine Award for Perseverance.

The M.V.P. Award was given to Dr. Scott Russell from the School of Business and the Mount’s Faculty Athletic Rep. to the NCAA.

The inaugural Royal Megaphone was awarded to Father Greg Fluet for his unwavering support of the Knights and the Student-Worker honor was given to Joseph Taglareni for her sterling work on the scoreboard and game clock at the Mount’s home Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse games.

Cameron Villanueva was awarded with the Sports Medicine Award, returning from long-term injury to appear in three games during the Mount’s 2021-22 Championship Season.
