May is Mental Health Awareness Month

On April 5th, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Iota Alpha Omega Chapter hosted an event in collaboration with the Newburgh/Highland Falls chapter of the NAACP for “Men’s Health and Wellness”. The speakers were phenomenal.

Dr. Lydell Lettsome is a member of the KUL chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., and the founder of the Vanbert Health Equity Project.

They are a nonprofit that focuses on working with churches in addressing health disparities but we also help other groups formulate programming.

Their website is www.vhep.org and they have started a YouTube Channel to provide community education. Joining him was Barrington R. Atkins, LMSW, Vice President of the Poughkeepsie Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi. He is also a school social worker in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District and a medical social worker for Vassar Brothers Medical Center. He teaches as a adjunct professor at Marist College.

The two led a very informative discussion. They addressed many health issues that both men and women have, while highlighting that men are less likely to go to the doctors.

Many health issues can be treated successfully if caught early. Routine visits are very important. Mr. Atkins talked about depression in African American males and what could be done to help. Many people feel that seeking help is a form of weakness. It is actually a sign of strength. Our mental health is an important part of our overall health. The two shared some great places to look for information. If you need help, please reach out.
