Orange County Legislator Kevindaryán Luján has suspended his candidacy for New York State’s 39th Senate District and announced that he is instead endorsing Julie Shiroishi, the Chair of the Dutchess County Democratic Committee and Chief of Staff to Assembly member Jonathan Jacobson.
“We will achieve the social and economic progress that we so desperately need, only if we unite and work together to ensure that Democrats win up and down the ballot,” Luján said.
“I believe Julie has the best chance of giving us the victory we need in the Hudson Valley to improve the lives of working families, immigrants, and people of all colors, ages, gender identities, and religions. Julie believes that no one should have to choose between their healthcare bill or their weekly groceries; their utilities or their rent. She’s a coalition-builder with the energy and experience to enact people-first policies. That’s why I wholeheartedly endorse her candidacy.”
Luján represents the 4th District in the Orange County Legislature. He announced his own candidacy for the 39th Senate District when it became vacant due to the redistricting implemented across the Hudson Valley this spring. Luján added, “During my brief campaign, my amazing volunteers spoke to voters from nearly the entire district, hearing their concerns and learning about their hopes for themselves and their families. To those volunteers I offer my profound gratitude, and I hope that that experience inspires them to run for office themselves someday.”
The district is currently served by Democrat James Skoufis of Cornwall, who is running in the newly redrawn 42nd S.D.
