Mount Women’s Tennis Drops Home Opener

NEWBURGH – After four straight matches on the road to start the season, the Mount Saint Mary College Women’s Team opened the home schedule Saturday with a 7-2 non-conference defeat at the hands of visiting Bard. Julia Flynn and Victoria Veloz-Vicioso scored singles wins in the match for the Knights.

Bard got off to a quick start on Saturday, taking all three doubles matches. Playing at the top flight, Sadie McNair and Flynn battled hard in a tough 8-6 defeat against the top pair for the Raptors.

In singles play, Flynn and Veloz-Vicioso posted wins for the Mount at the third and fifth positions, respectively. Flynn picked up her second singles win of the season on Saturday following an impressive 6-4, 6-2 victory. Veloz-Vicioso also scored her second singles win of the fall, battling her way to a 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10-8) win at the fifth slot.

Saturday’s loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 1-4 overall on the season. Next up for the Mount is a home non-conference contest against Utica on Wednesday. Matches are scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
