MSMC Knights Rally to Victory Over Utica

NEWBURGH – The Mount Saint Mary College Women’s Tennis team got back into the win column Wednesday afternoon with a hard fought 5-4 come-from-behind victory over visiting Utica. Sadie McNair picked up her fourth singles win of the season in the contest.

Mount Saint Mary fell behind early after dropping two of the three doubles matches on the day. The first and third pairs each dropped tough 8-6 decisions, while McNair and Katie Murray scored an 8-3 triumph, their first as a unit this season.

After teaming with Murray for the second doubles win, McNair cruised to her team leading fourth singles win of the season. She posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the third position to bring the Knights to within 3-2 in the contest.

The bottom third of the Mount’s lineup had a big day in singles play with the fourth, fifth and sixth positions each scoring victories. Blanca Ayala Santana won her first singles match of the season with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the fourth position before Victoria Veloz-Vicoso moved to 3-3 in singles play with a 6-3, 6-1 fifth singles triumph. Victoria Ward clinched the victory for the Knights at the sixth slot, battling to a 6-6 (10-3), 6-1 win for the Mount.

Wednesday’s win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 2-4 overall on the season. Next up for the Knights is a road non-conference match at Pratt on Saturday. Matches at the USTA in Flushing are scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
