The Mount Wins their Conference Opener, 94-36

NEWBURGH – The Mount Saint Mary College Women’s Basketball team overwhelmed Old Westbury at home on Saturday afternoon, beating the Panthers 94-36 in their first conference contest of the season. The Knights forced 32 turnovers as a team, coming away with 21 steals as a unit

Saturday’s win gives the Mount three straight victories since dropping the season opener and improves the Knights to 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in Skyline play. Meanwhile, Old Westbury drops to 0-3 on the campaign, and 0-1 in conference action.

First Half
The Knights struggled through the opening period but came out ahead, up 19-10.

The Knights quickly built a lead of 6-0 after 1:41 of play. Katie Smith sunk a pair of free throws, while Brianna Guglielmo and Erin Smith both hit a layup to extend the lead.

Lauren Desrats banked home a layup at the 5:12 mark of the opening quarter to give the Knights their largest lead of 15-5.

An Old Westbury jumper by Shannon Myles cut the deficit to 15-9 with 2:47 remaining in the first quarter.

The Knights came out hot in the second quarter, posting a 14-0 run through the first 4:29 of the stanza. K. Smith and Asia Rivera combined for 11 of the 14 points during the stretch that saw the Mount build a 33-10 advantage.

A trio of triples by Cailean Nolan closed out the half for the Knight;, the final coming with two seconds left in the opening half to give the Knights a 48-20 lead going into the break.
The Mount shot a tick below 50-percent in the opening half, finishing 18-for-37 from the

field while going 4-for-15 from three.

Old Westbury went 7-23 from the field and 0-4 from deep in the first half.

Second Half
The third quarter was all Mount Saint Mary, as it outscored Old Westbury 24-4.

Charlotte Twohig scored 11 of the 24 points in the quarter, capped off by a triple off a feed from Kaeli McAnally to extend the lead to 69-24.

A triple by Katelyn McCann closed out the third period, going to the final quarter with a score of 72-24 in the Knights favor.

The final period began with Marissa Campbell drilling a three and a pair of layups to push the Knights lead to 79-25 with 6:52 left to play.

Casey Love closed out the Knights scoring with a layup with 1:27 left, and Tyela Davidson scored a layup for the Panthers with 30 seconds remaining to wrap up the Knights 94-36 win.

The Knights shot 19-35 in the second half, including 6-12 from three.

The Panthers went 6-23 after halftime, shooting 0-3 from beyond the arc.

For The Knights
Campbell scored 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting including 2-of-2 from three, while coming away with eight rebounds, both of which were game-highs.

Nolan posted 11 points on the day, drilling three triples on five attempts.

Twohig and McCann provided nine points each.

Rivera chipped in seven points, four rebounds and swiped four steals.

Love swiped five steals, good for a game high.

Eight Mount defenders recorded at least one steal.

For The Panthers
Destiny Jackson led Old Westbury with nine points, also ripping down seven rebounds.

Melinda Harris chipped in eight points, six boards and three steals.
