Army Black Knights Defeat Sacred Heart 50-48

WEST POINT – The Army West Point Women’s Basketball team (2-5, 0-0 PL) defeated Sacred Heart (1-7, 0-0 NEC), 50-48 Thursday night. Senior Sabria Hunter cleaned up on the glass, breaking the Army Women’s Basketball’s single game record with 23 rebounds.

Three different players had previously held the record with 22 boards, most recently Lindsey Scamman with 22, 2019-20.Hunter also proved to be the hero in the game scoring the game-winner with 3.5 seconds remaining to give Army the advantage. Army’s Kamryn Hall and Sam McNaughton led the Black Knights with 10 points each.

In the first quarter, the Sacred Heart Pioneers led Army, 16-4. In the second quarter the Black Knights struck first, cutting Sacred Heart’s lead with the help from a jumper from Reese Ericson and a 3-point basket from Charlotte Richman. The Pioneers kept a 10-point lead with a 3-point play, giving them a 19-9 lead. With 42 seconds left in the second quarter Lauren Lithgow put Army within four points with a 3-point bucket, going into halftime down 21-17.

In the second half Army further cut into Sacred Heart’s lead with a layup Reese Ericson putting the Black Knights within two. Kamryn Hall tied everything up with a layup in the paint. However, the Pioneers stayed in the game with a layup from Ny’ceara Pryor. With scoring going back and forth, the Black Knights stayed within one-point with a three from McNaughton. With two minutes left on the clock, Army took a one-point lead with the help of a three-point play from McNaughton. Army further extended their lead to two with a 3 from Lithgow. The Pioneers again answered back with a three-pointer from Olivia Tucker with 44 seconds left in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter of action the Black Knights answered back with a 7-0 run, with the help from a three from Richman, a layup from Hunter, as well as a jumper from McNaughton putting Army up by six. Sacred Heart stayed in the fight with taking the lead with Carly Stroemel’s layup. Stroemel extended their lead by three with five minutes of action left. Hall kept Army in the action with a layup of her own. With under four minutes of action left, Sacred Heart’s Bonner extended their lead to four points with a three-point play.

The Black Knights went on a 7-0 run with less than three minutes left in the game. Sabria Hunter made both free throw attempts, again putting them within two. McNaughton had the equalizer, making both free throw attempts after being fouled by Sacred Heart’s Tucker. In one minute of action, the Black Knights had two steals one from Lauren Lithgow and one from Hall.

Tied at 48 and Army having possession on a side out, Sabria Hunter made the game winning layup with 3.5 seconds remaining, putting Army up for good, 50-48. In tonight’s game Sabria Hunter led Army with 23 rebounds, setting a new program record for boards.

The Black Knights go back on the road to face Hofstra University on Wednesday, December 7 at 7 p.m.
