Black Knights Tennis Split Home Competition

WEST POINT – The Army West Point women’s tennis team went 1-1 at home, falling to Fordham 5-2 and defeating Vassar College 7-0 on Saturday.

The Fordham Rams got on the board first after winning the doubles point. Fordham’s Valeriya Deminova and Avery Aude defeated Cooper Jackson and Elizabeth Gilbert 6-2.

Lorraine Bergmann and Sofia Siem bested McKinnley Smith and Anna Loureiro 6-3.

In the singles matches the Rams continued their success winning four of the six matches.

Valeriya Deminova competed against Army’s Cooper Jackson in the No. 1 spot. Deminova bested Jackson in two sets (6-1, 6-2). In the second position, Emma Sy faced Lindsay Hung. Hung bested Sy 6-4, 6-4.

In the No. 3 spot Army’s Jenna Sabile competed against Eleni Fasoula. In the first set, Sabile defeated Fasoula 6-2. Fasoula came back in the second set, winning 6-2. In the tiebreaker set, Sabile bested Fasoula 6-1, putting the Black Knights on the board. In the fourth spot, Fordham’s Avery Aude defeated Ylan Duong in two sets (6-4, 6-4).

In the fifth spot, Fordham’s Carlota Casasampere Escode defeated Vennmukiil Mathivanan in three sets. Mathivanan won the first set 7-6. While Casasampere Escode bested Mathivanan in the second set 7-6. Casasampere Escode defeated Mathivanan in a thrilling third set with a final score of 7-6.

In the No 6 spot Carolyn Ahn faced Lorraine Bergmann. Ahn won her match in two sets (6-4, 6-0).

In the Vassar match, Army won the doubles point after winning all three matches. In the No. 1 spot, Isabella Brilliant and Maria Drobotova bested Sofie Shen and Erin McCusker 6-1. Vassar’s Macey Dowd and Iris Li fell to Army’s McKinnley Smith and Anna Loureiro 6-2 in the second spot. While in the No.3 spot, Elizabeth Gilbert and Sophie McKenzie defeated Tatum Blalock and Elyse Duley 6-1.

In the singles matches, Army continued to dominate the court. In the No. 1 spot, Gilbert bested Tatum Blalock in two sets (6-1, 6-1). In the second spot, Army’s Maria Drobotova defeated Macey Dowd in two sets with scores of 6-2, 6-1.

In No. 3, senior Sophie McKenzie competed against Vassar’s Erin McCusker. Outlasting McCusker 6-3, 2-6 and winning a tiebreaker. In the fourth spot, McKinnley Smith bested Sophie Shen in two sets (6-2, 7-5). Army won the No. 5 spot with Anna Loureiro defeating Iris Li 6-3, 6-0. Paulina Feoli secured the win in the sixth spot, besting Ananya Krishnan in two sets (6-1, 6-3).
