ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – The Marist men’s basketball team fell to Iona in the MAAC championship game by a score of 76-55 on Saturday at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall.
Iona scored eight straight points to take an early 10-2 lead.
Patrick Gardner scored four straight points as Marist cut its deficit in half to four.
The Red Foxes held the Gaels scoreless for 3:40.
A 7-0 Iona run gave the Gaels an 11-point lead at the 9:08 mark.
Marist countered with a 6-0 run as Iona was held off the scoreboard for 4:45.
Iona led 35-26 at halftime. Gardner scored half of Marist’s points in the first 20 minutes.
Marist went on a 6-0 run to cut its deficit to four with 13:38 left in the second half.
Kam Farris’ three-pointer tied the score at 46 with 10:36 remaining.
Iona countered with an 11-2 run to go up 57-48 with 5:27 left.
Gardner scored five straight points to bring the Red Foxes within four at the 4:42 mark, but Iona answered with an 11-0 run to go up 15.
Iona scored the game’s final eight points. The 21-point final margin was the largest of the game.
