Army Baseball Powers Past Bucknell in 15-0 Win

LEWISBURG, PA. – The Army West Point baseball team (22-12, 10-2 PL) defeated the Bucknell Bison (15-18, 8-8, PL) 15-0. Army’s Braden Golinski went 4-5, having three runs, three RBIs, a double, and a home run. Starter Tanner Gresham pitched 6.0 innings, striking out four, walking one, and having 1 hit.

After a scoreless first inning, Army attacked Bucknell starter Chris DiFiore (L, 3-5). Braden Golinski hit a solo home run to left field, giving the Black Knights a 1-0 lead. With two outs, freshman Ethan Ellis blasted a solo home run, giving Army a 2-0 lead. Bucknell cleared the side with a fly-out.

The bats came alive for the Black Knights in the top of the third inning. Addison Ainsworth walked, putting the leadoff batter on first. Junior Derek Berg hit a single to center field, putting runners on first and second. Berg advanced to second. Ainsworth advanced to third, on an error by catcher Jake Wortman, Ainsworth came in to score, giving Army a 3-0 lead. Berg advanced to third on a wild pitch. Sam Ruta walked, putting runners on the corners.

Shortstop Kevin Dubrule hit a sacrifice fly to center field, sending Berg across the plate, making it a 4-0 game. The Black Knights made it a 5-0 game, after Braden Golinski ripped an RBI single to center field, sending Ruta across the plate. With runners on first and second, Bucknell retired the side after tagging Golinski out at third.

With two outs in the bottom of the third, Bucknell’s Kyle Lyons hit a single up the middle, putting a runner on first. Army starter Tanner Gresham ended the inning with a strikeout.

In the top of the fourth, Army continued to attack DiFiore. Bret Copeland ripped a leadoff single to left field, putting a runner on first. Ainsworth hit a sacrifice bunt, advancing Copeland to second, and putting a runner in scoring position. Derek Berg walked, putting runners on first and second. With one out, Ruta hit a three-run home run to left center, giving the Black Knights a commanding 8-0 lead. Relief pitcher Graeme Carroll came into the game for Chris DiFiore. Dubrule was hit by a pitch, putting a runner on first. With two outs, the bats stayed alive for Army. Golinski ripped an RBI double down the left field line, sending Dubrule across the plate, making it a 9-0 game. Sophomore Coleson Titus hit an RBI single up the middle, sending Golinski in to score, giving the Black Knights a commanding 10-0 lead, Titus advanced to second on a fielding error by first baseman Tyler Dunn. Bucknell cleared the side after Wortman tagged Titus out at third.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Bison got out in order.

Jacob Terwilliger came in to pitch relief for Graeme Carroll.

In the top of the fifth, Army attempted to further extend its lead. Ellis was hit by a pitch, putting a runner on first. With one out, Addison Ainsworth walked, putting runners on first and second. Terwilliger retired the side with a strikeout and a fly-out.

Bucknell’s Chris Klein walked with two outs in the bottom of the inning, putting a runner on first. Gresham cleared the side with a strikeout.

The Black Knights continued to attack Bucknell’s pitching staff. Kevin Dubrule ripped a leadoff double down the right field line, putting a runner in scoring position. Senior Ross Friedrick made it an 11-0 game, after hitting a double down the left field line, sending Dubrule across the plate. Braden Golinski continued to command the plate. Golinski ripped a single to right field, Friedrick to third, and Golinski reached second, after advancing on the throw. Titus brought in two runs, after hitting a single up the middle, giving Army a 13-0 lead. Ellis followed with a single to center field, advancing Titus to second, putting a runner in scoring position. With one out, Brady Swenson came into the game for Terwilliger.

The Black Knights had two runners in scoring position after Ellis and Titus advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Army further opened the game up, after Tits came in to score off a passed ball. Army loaded the bases after having two batters walk. Ruta was hit by a pitch, sending Ellis in to score, giving the Black Knights a 15-0 lead. Mikey Myro came in to relief for Swenson. Myro retired the side with a fly-out and a strikeout.
Gresham had a 1,2,3 inning in the bottom of the sixth.

In the top of the seventh, the Bison cleared the side with two fly-outs and a groundout.
Army’s Will Hart came in to relief for Tanner Gresham.

The Black Knights secured the win with a fly-out, a groundout, and a strikeout.
