MSMC Knights Baseball Earns Split With Panthers

NEWBURGH – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team split a home Skyline Conference set with Old Westbury Saturday afternoon, falling 10-2 in the opener before rebounding for an 8-5 game two victory. Brian Gregory worked 7.0 strong innings in game two with Jack Goodwin and Robert Brust each blasting a home run in the Mount’s victory.
Mount Saint Mary stands at 9-22 overall and 4-8 following Saturday’s split, while Old Westbury moves to 11-14 overall and 5-5 in conference action.

The Panthers jumped out in front quickly in the opener, plating five runs in their first at-bat.

John Dell’Olio tripled home a run to start the first inning scoring with Jaime Barrios and Michael Petrucelly adding run scoring base hits in the inning.

Mount Saint Mary got a run back in the home half of the first when Goodwin led off the inning with a walk and came home on an Anthony Franco double.

Old Westbury tacked on three runs in the third to break the game open and grab an 8-1 advantage.

Jamal Ritter walked in a run ahead of a two-run single from Jacob Taormina to close out the scoring in the inning.

The Knights got their second run in the home half of the fifth when Goodwin delivered Liam Merlin with a sacrifice fly.

The Panthers finished off the scoring in the game with their final two tallies in the sixth inning.

Barrios singled home a run in the sixth with Dominic Felicetti shot a single up the middle for the final run of the game.

For The Knights
Franco closed game one 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Goodwin walked, scored a run and drove in one run.

Merlin finished with a hit and a run scored.

Matthew Borriello suffered the loss on the mound, working 5.1 innings and allowing nine earned runs on 15 hits. He struck out three and walked four.

John Morehead worked 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits and striking out two.

Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 8 – Old Westbury 5
The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Charlie Eisele sent a two-out single to left field that pushed home Nick Papageorge.

Old Westbury maintained the one-run lead until the bottom of the fifth when Goodwin drove a two-run home run down the right field line with two outs in the inning to move the Knights in front 2-1.

In the top of the sixth, Ritter led off the inning with a solo blast to knot the score and Oscar Fajardo provided a run scoring single in the inning to give the visitors back a 3-2 lead.

The Knights came back with four tallies in the seventh to surge in front in the game.

Brust launched a solo shot to straight away center to knot the score at 3-3 with Franco pushing the Knights in front 4-3 with an RBI single.

Goodwin came home on an infield single from Devin Tait before Franco scored the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Merlin.

The Panthers pulled to within 6-5 in the eighth when they scratched out their final two runs.

Clinging to a 6-5 advantage, the Knights got two insurance runs in the eighth to close out the scoring in the game.

Goodwin shot a single through the left side to deliver Brust ahead of a run scoring single from Franco that chased Goodwin home.

For The Knights
Goodwin wrapped up the victory 3-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored and three RBI.

Franco finished 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI.

Brust put together a 2-for-3 effort that featured a home run, two runs and an RBI.

Aidan Marshall went 2-for-4 with a walk.

Gregory won his fourth game of the season with 7.0 strong innings on the mound. He allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out five, including the side in order in the third inning.

Michael Di Tullio picked up his first save of the season, recording the final six outs and striking out two batters.
