GENEVA – The Vassar College Women’s Tennis team opened play at the ITA Northeast Regional Tournament on Saturday in strong fashion. The second seeded doubles pair of Erin McCusker and Sofie Shen advanced to the quarterfinal round, while McCusker and Macey Dowd moved through to the Round of 16 in singles play.
Doubles
Seeded second in the tournament draw, McCusker and Shen delivered a pair of wins on Saturday to move to the quarterfinal round.
Vassar’s top duo earned their first victory over a pair from Misericordia, 8-1, before topping their opponents from RPI, 8-5 to close out play on Day One.
Vassar has two other doubles team earn victories on Saturday.
Elyse Duley and Maddie Kirby earned a first round victory over Utica, 8-6.
Dowd and Iris Li teamed up for an 8-4 victory over a team from Hamilton on Saturday.
Singles
Dowd and McCusker highlighted the singles performers for the Brewers on Saturday with each posting a pair of wins.
Dowd advanced to the Round of 16 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over an opponent from Utica, before cruising past the opposition from NYU, 6-2, 6-2.
McCusker also battled to a pair of wins on Saturday, taking down the First Round opponent from NYU, 6-2, 6-4 before outlasting the opposition from TCNJ in the Second Round 3-6, 7-6 (2), 10-6.
Vassar also received strong singles performances on Saturday from Ananya Krishnan and Shen who each posted one victory.
Krishnan overtook the First Round opponent from NYU, 4-6, 7-5, 15-13.
Shen posted a First Round 6-3, 6-2 over the opponent from TCNJ.
