Army Drops Home Matchup Against Binghamton

WEST POINT – The Army West Point women’s basketball team (2-7) fell to the Binghamton Bearcats (4-8) by a score of 73-51 Wednesday afternoon. It was a big night for the freshman class as they combined for 66% of Army’s total points. Freshman Kya Smith led the team in scoring again after leading the Black Knights in their last matchup against Vermont. Smith had 12 points and six rebounds followed up by fellow freshman Fiona Hastick who put up ten points and pulled down three boards.

Binghamton opened up the scoring by going on an 8-0 run to start the first ten minutes of play. Kya Smith ended that run by hitting two free throws for Army’s first points at the six-minute mark. The Black Knights scored nine points in the final three minutes with every point coming from a freshman until senior captain Sam McNaughton hit a mid-range jumper to cut the Bearcat lead to six and end the quarter.

Picking up where she left off, Smith opened up the scoring in the second quarter. In a full team effort, three other Black Knights put up buckets and made it a three-point game with just under seven minutes to go in the first half. Binghamton would answer by going on a 10-0 run broken up by a McNaughton jumper at the two-minute mark and Army would head into the break trailing 23-36.

Fiona Hastick scored the opening four points in the third quarter while Hardy, McNaughton, Smith, and Montrose all contributed to Army’s 12 total third-quarter points. The Black Knights would head into the final frame down by 17 points, trailing 35-52.

Hastick came out ready to play as she did in the third, hitting two threes in the final ten minutes. Taylor Wilson scored all five of her points in the fourth quarter while pulling down five boards.

Army will take a short holiday break before taking on Five Towns College at home on December 30th at 5:00 PM.
