Tarul Ties Career-High as Red Foxes Fall Short

NEW ROCHELLE – Senior Zaria Shazer tallied 17 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double while Lexie Tarul added 11 points, but it wasn’t enough, as Marist women’s basketball came up short on the road against MAAC foe Iona, 70-60, Saturday afternoon inside of the Hynes Athletic Center.

With the loss, Marist falls to 2-11 on the campaign and 0-3 in the MAAC, while Iona improves to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play on the 2023-24 season.

First Quarter
The Red Foxes used the opening 2:15 of the contest to jump out to a 7-0 lead behind five quick points from Lexie Tarul.

However, the Gaels responded with a 7-0 run of their own to knot the contest at 7-7 entering the media timeout at the midway point of the opening frame. The two sides proceeded to exchange points the rest of the way in the quarter, with Marist carrying a 13-12 lead into the second.

Second Quarter
The Red Foxes went 2-for-9 from the field to open the second quarter, as Iona outscored them 11-7 to hold a 23-20 advantage with 4:11 remaining in the half. Despite the cold shooting streak, Marist was able to stay within striking distance, trailing by just one at the half at 28-27.

Third Quarter
After Marist trimmed the deficit to 32-31, the Gaels went on a swift 6-2 run to take a 38-33 lead with 3:39 left in the third quarter at the media timeout. The Gaels stayed hot out of the timeout, closing the frame with a 9-3 run to carry a 47-36 lead into the fourth.

Fourth Quarter
The Gaels scored five straight points to open the final period before Marist responded with an 11-2, capped by a Zaria Shazer three-point play and Jackie Piddock three to trim the deficit to seven with just over four minutes to go.

However, the comeback attempt fell short as Iona eventually held on for the 70-60 victory over Marist.

The Red Foxes will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 11, Marist continues MAAC play at home against Rider.
