NEWBURGH – The Mount Saint Mary College Knights’ softball season came to a close last Tuesday with a hard-fought 12-2 defeat against the College at Old Westbury in the first round of the Skyline Conference Tournament.

The Knights got things going early in the bottom of the first inning with a run, as Laura Dentato singled to third base, and was brought home by a Samantha Bendig double down the left field line. The Knights held on to this lead until Old Westbury struck top of the fifth inning, scoring an unearned run to tie the game. The game remained tied until the 7th inning when the Panthers scored, and went ahead 2-1. Riley Norwood walked with 1 out and then Olivia Ferara doubled to left field, sending Norwood on a three base sprint to keep the Knights season alive. The score was tied through 8 innings, 2-2

Old Westbury went on a ten-run ninth inning to put the game away.

Despite the final score, the Knights had several strong individual performances, including: Olivia Ferara: 4-AB, 1-H, 1-RBI, 1 double; Samantha Bendig: 3-AB, 1-H, 1-RBI, 1 double, 1 HBP; and Grace MacDonald: 8.0 IP, 11-H, 8-R, 6-ER, 4-BB, 4-K.

Head Coach Samantha Howe said, “It’s a disappointing way to end the season, but the team fought hard until the very end,” said Howe. “We had our opportunities, but Old Westbury is a good team and they took advantage. I’m proud of the seniors and the effort our team put forth all season.”

The Knights finish the season with a 17-22 record. While their season has concluded, the future looks bright for the Mount Saint Mary College softball program.
