MONTGOMERY – For Chelsea Hardy, being a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority carries with it transformative life pearls whose impact can best be understood by the authentic communal and strengthening feeling it creates.
“The best part of being a part of AKA is the sisterhood; we truly embrace one another and really show empowerment,” Hardy, clad in the sorority’s symbolic pink and green colors and 13 year member of the Tau Omega Chapter and whose mother, Michelle, has been a proud AKA member for 44 years, said. “When we find one another, there is always a warm embrace.”
That joyful hugging and genuine bonding could be spotted throughout the grounds of the City Winery in Montgomery where the 116 year old African-American female established 350,000 global member sorority welcomed in its newest, 157th region chapter, Alpha Gamma Eta Omega. Guided by the principles of; sisterhood, service and scholarship as well as mission of; fellowship, innovation, respect and serve and thrive(F.I.R.S.T.), the newly christened chapter, whose roots lie in the ever-present, ambitious interest group, V.I.P. Pearls of Orange County, includes 27 members and is led by Chartering and President, Sonya Grant, who could not think of a more fitting backdrop for the occasion than a winery.
“In literature wine connotes happiness and friendship; it represents fierceness, prodigy and mystery,” explained Grant. “Just like grapes we (VIP Pearls) were pressed and transformed through a fermentation process to ensure we were ready to operate a chapter and serve the Orange County communities at large; our AKA sisterhood is like fine wine-it will only get better with time.”
That ideal celebratory setting came to life last Sunday, May 19, as an ensemble of smiling, uplifting Sisters, many dressed in customary white for the formal festivities, convened amidst a picture perfect, sunny afternoon. While the newest chapter was officially christened in a private chartering ceremony, guests from an array of the 1050 global chapters were treated to the visual delight of a greeting flower-decorated lady in a strolling table deftly swaying her arms in unison, soft rhythmic melodies of a standing violinist as well as emotionally moving dancing exhibition, assortment of vendors and overall vibe of bonding and empowerment which included a luncheon segment where five area organizations were honored. The pulse of the excitement was not only in the present moment, welcoming in this new chapter, but in all the possibilities that lie ahead for it as well as the breadth of the impact of AKA world-wide.
“Today is an exciting occasion where we have formed a new chapter to celebrate,” said Elicia Pegues-Spearman, ESQ, North Atlantic Regional Director of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, whose members span from Washington, DC to Maine. “We are now able to provide even more services to the community.”
Involved in such altruistic endeavors as; the American Heart Association Walk, local food pantries, coat giveaways, holiday assistance and other venues aimed at uplifting and serving their communities, Alpha Kappa Alpha is committed to increasing their numbers along with means and impact to assist the increasing needs of those who surround them.
“This new charter today truly shows the growth of this organization, said Hardy. “That development is not only happening here in New York, but also around the world.”
