BEACON – Tiannah Lindsay can vividly recall diligently and energetically role playing a teacher at a very young age with her sisters as her attentive pupils. Kyla Richardson, when reflecting back on her childhood, is quick to cite a similar excitement-passion when she first picked up a glove to play softball, falling in love with the game and its countless lessons.
Both Class of 2024 Beacon High School graduates were recognized Saturday afternoon at a special ceremony for their hard work ethics, wide range of interests and involvements as well as unwavering commitments to their beloved Beacon community. Inside the local Community Center, five women from the long-standing, community-minded Beacon Les Soeurs Amiables Club officially recognized these two outstanding young ladies with their annual scholarships to assist them on their upcoming collegiate journeys. Richardson, away on a family vacation, was unable to attend but expressed her deep gratitude through a heartfelt letter to the committee.

“I’m humbled and filled with joy as I accept this awesome scholarship from the ladies of Les Soeurs,” said Richardson, who played for the BHS Varsity and outside traveling softball teams, and was recruited to play the sport at Bowie State University in Maryland where she will major in Finance and Economics. “I am eager to begin this new era in my life, armed with the support and encouragement of my loved ones; I look forward to making the most of the opportunities that lie ahead both academically and athletically.”
Lindsay, along with her parents and two of her sisters, was able to attend the scholarship presentation. Discussing those priceless childhood memories of constructing creative and fun worksheets for familial reenacted, specially decorated classroom as a child, Lindsay relayed details about her growing teaching passion as well as intentions to pursue a major in elementary education. Her love for education is only rivaled by her deep commitment to her Beacon community, a place she wants to return after college education and secure a first grade teaching position. After all, it’s where so many inspirational people reside, shaping her life today.

“I found out about this scholarship through my mom who is friends with one of the ladies in the Les Soeurs group,” explained Lindsay, who was Secretary of the Black Student Union and Co-President of the Dance Step Team at BHS as well as an active member at her Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church. “These ladies do a lot for the community, so this honor is extra special because it’s coming from a part of my community which means so much to me.”
