MOUNT VERNON – Eager incoming freshmen patiently lined up outside of Mount Vernon High School with their parents on Thursday, August 15, 2024, to exchange their laptops and prepare for the upcoming school year.
During this time, scholars were able to step inside the high school and get acquainted with the building before they begin their high school careers on Tuesday, September 3. They traded in their old elementary school devices for the new laptops they’ll use over the next four years. Students also received their new school ID’s, along with the important information they should know before the first day of school, such as the bell schedule, code of conduct, and school supply lists.
“I feel excited but also nervous,” said Kiona Cole, incoming freshman from Lincoln Elementary. “I am nervous because of the work and stuff, but I feel like I will get used to it after a while. While I’m here, I want to do cosmetology for hair and nails, but I want to explore more stuff that is here.”
Principal Dr. Pauline Pearce was there to meet with students and talk to them about any questions or concerns they may have about starting high school. The students appreciated having the administrator there, helping them transition smoothly into their new environment.
“Having our students come beforehand is important for a great start to the school year, because they will be able to come on September 3rd and go to meet their teachers,” said Dr. Pearce. “So, they will follow a mock shortened schedule so that they can get a feel of the building and what it will be like on the day to day. Our Superintendent says that the theme this year is ‘Back to School 2.0’, and we really need our ninth graders to come fully prepared for school.”
