Hawks Have Exciting Day at Union Tourney

SCHENECTADY – The State University of New York New Paltz women’s tennis team competed in the first day of the Union tournament Saturday.

“A good first day’s play at the Union Tournament,” said Hawks coach Rob Bruley. “The team really enjoyed the challenge of playing a high level of doubles and singles in preperation for our upcoming dual match season. We resume doubles and singles play tomorrow morning.”

Singles Matches
Sydney Sladicka started the morning with a loss but battled back, winning her next two matches. She lands in contention for the fifth place match, which will take place Sunday morning. Justine Stanejko will also compete Sunday morning for a seventh place finish.

Stanejko fell in both the first and second round of the tournament and looks to battle back in her final match.

Isabel van der Veen and Amirah Alston will also compete Sunday morning. Van der veen went 2-1 Saturday and looks to battle for fifth place in her next match. Alston also went 2-1 and will be working towards a seventh place finish.

Angelica Gabriel went 1-1 on the day landing herself in the third place bracket. The round will also take place Sunday morning.

Olivia Eifert went 1-1 on the day. Nina Genzone and Oliwia Grabowski both went 3-3 today in their matches and will compete tomorrow morning in the semifinal round of the “D” singles bracket.

Doubles Matches
Gabriel and Sladicka lost the first round of doubles but will compete again Sunday morning now in the consolation bracket. Stanejko and van der Veen won their first match and will continue chasing the championship tittle Sunday Morning. Alston and Olivia Kunz, as well as Genzone and Grabowski also won their first matches in the doubles category. Alston and Kunz will compete in the quarterfinals while Genzone and Grabowski won their first two doubles matches and will be focusing on their semi-final match.
