POUGHKEEPSIE – First years Bailey Mann, Ella Martin and Zoe Robinson all scored their first career goals on Saturday afternoon as the Vassar College Field Hockey team earned a convincing 5-1 victory over Smith College at Weinberg Field. The Brewers improve to 2-3 on the season while the Pioneers fall to 1-4 overall.
Vassar got on the board first about five and a half minutes into the first quarter as junior Sofia Beseth knocked home a penalty stroke to give the Brewers the early lead.
Beseth doubled the advantage about a minute and a half into the second period as she buried her second goal of the game.
Smith cut the lead in half about a minute later when Callahan Day potted the lone Pioneer goal off an assist from Eva Kinnel.
Mann gave the Brewers a 3-1 lead heading into halftime as she scored her first career goal off a feed from sophomore Anna Hazewindus with five minutes left in the opening half.
Robinson opened up the Vassar lead to three goals just under seven minutes into the third quarter as the first year’s shot bounced off a Smith defender’s leg and past the goalie for the first career goal.
Martin’s first career goal came off a rebound on a shot saved from Robinson in the final minute of the third quarter to hand Vassar a 5-1 victory at home.
For The Brewers
Beseth’s two goals give her a team-high three for the season and the junior also registered four shots.
Mann, Martin and Robinson also recorded their first career goals while Hazewindus tallied her first career point on the assist to Mann.
Sophomore Grace Wiley earned the victory in goal for Vassar as the sophomore turned away seven shots.
For The Pioneers
Day scored the lone goal for Smith while Kinnel picked up the assist.
Kyleigh Poot and Annie Wimsatt each recorded a defensive save.
Emma Newman made five saves in goal in the loss for the Pioneers.
