WEST POINT – Former President Barack Obama received the prestigious Thayer Award at the United States Military Academy on September 19, 2024, that began with the Corps of Cadets conducting a parade in his honor on the Plain.
The Thayer Award was presented to Obama for his exceptional leadership and enduring commitment to public service. The Thayer Award, named after the Academy’s first superintendent, General Sylvanus Thayer, is presented annually since 1958 to individuals who have made significant contributions to the nation and exemplified the principles of duty, honor, and country.

In a heartfelt ceremony attended by cadets, military officials, and distinguished guests, Obama reflected on his years in office and the importance of civic engagement. “True leadership is not just about holding a position of power; it’s about empowering others and fostering a sense of community,” he stated. His remarks emphasized the value of collaboration and resilience in overcoming national challenges.
The Thayer Award has previously honored prominent figures including General Colin Powell. Obama was the fifth U.S. president to receive the Thayer Award during its 67-year history following Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush.
Superintendent of West Point, Lieutenant General Steven W. Gilland, praised Obama for his “visionary approach to leadership,” highlighting his efforts in education reform and healthcare during his presidency. “He has inspired countless individuals to take up the mantle of service, reinforcing the idea that every citizen has a role to play in shaping our future,” Gilland said.

In addition to the award, Obama participated in a roundtable discussion with cadets, encouraging them to remain committed to their ideals and pursue innovative solutions to complex issues facing the nation. The event concluded with a standing ovation, as attendees celebrated a legacy of leadership that continues to resonate across generations.
