$32M Sewer Improvement Project Completed

NEWBURGH – Newburgh City Manager Todd Venning has announced the completion of the $32M North Interceptor Sewer Improvement Project – the latest major capital project completed under the Newburgh City Council’s $140M infrastructure improvement plan. The North Interceptor Sewer Improvement Project is one of the most significant clean water projects in New York State, and the realignment of the City’s underground sewer infrastructure will facilitate the redevelopment and restoration of “The Hillside” – a once vibrant section of the City that was destroyed during the failed urban renewal era.

The North Interceptor Sewer Improvement Project is the most significant infrastructure project the City has completed in decades and is the largest project the City has completed as part of its $140M infrastructure improvement plan. The $32M project commenced construction in April 2022 and was completed in less than two-and-a-half years. The project installed 8,700 linear feet of new, larger-gravity sanitary piping, including more than 2,000 feet of piping through an innovative microtunneling technique that reduced disruptions for residents and expedited the project’s completion. The City worked with federal and state agencies to secure more than $31M in grants and interest-free financing, bringing this major capital project to completion with minimal cost to City taxpayers.

City Manager Todd Venning, “The completion of the $32M North Interceptor Sewer Improvement Project is the latest example of the City of Newburgh bringing another major capital improvement project to completion on budget and on schedule. I want to recognize the incredible work of City Commissioner of Public Works Jason Morris for bringing yet another major capital improvement project to completion, and express sincere gratitude to Governor Kathy Hochul for her unwavering commitment to our City’s residents, and all residents of the Hudson Valley.”

The City of Newburgh’s completion of the $32M North Interceptor Sewer Improvement Project provided significant streetscapeupgrades throughout the City’s East End, including the narrowing of over-wide streets to calm traffic, reducing impervious surfaces, and adding additional parking to several streets where none previously existed. Those streets include:
• Colden Street, between Renwick Street and Water Street
• Renwick Street, between Liberty Street and Water Street
• South William Street, between Edward Street and Water Street
• Washington Street, between Colden Street and Water Street
• Broadway, east of the Police Department Entrance
• Second Street, between Montgomery Street and Water Street
• Nicoll Street, from Montgomery Street to Dead-End
• Lower Broadway, east of CNPD Headquarters
• Water Street, in various sections

Commissioner of Public Works Jason Morris, “This historic achievement marks yet another infrastructure success story here in the City of Newburgh, where we are renewing and upgrading water, wastewater, transportation and park infrastructure as part of the City’s $140M infrastructure improvement plan. The City’s completion of this major capital project benefits the entire Hudson Valley with increased wastewater capacity to foster responsible development, improved water quality, protection of environmental habitats and the preservation of unique recreational areas.”
