Mazzarelli Leads Mount Men’s Soccer to First Conference Win

PURCHASE – The Mount Saint Mary College men’s soccer team finally secured its first Skyline Conference win of the year over Purchase College.

Mount Saint Mary traveled down to Purchase, New York for a conference match-up against Purchase College, where both teams were looking for their first win in Skyline play. The Knights came out the gate setting the tone. The first shot on net would be a goal for Marco Mazzarelli assisted by Dale Allison. Mazzarelli broke his dry spell this afternoon providing a plethora of offense for the Knights. Providing consistent pressure, the Mount was able to create chances and get some solid shots on goal throughout the match. Carson Macur would set up Marco Mazzarelli right before the half for some more Mazzarelli Magic to make the score 2-0. The Knights’ defense did a great job keeping goalie Caesar Martinez clean throughout the first 45 minutes, not surrendering a single shot on goal.

Things would take a turn for the worse quickly at the start of the second half. A foul by Quinn Tynan resulted in a penalty kick and a red card, forcing the Knights to play down a man for the rest of the match. Purchase converted the penalty kick to cut their deficit to one. The Panthers offense flipped a switch, firing away nine shots in a ten-minute span. In the 62nd minute, Purchase scored the equalizer to make it 2-2. With their backs against the wall, the short-handed Knights did not give up. Who else but Marco Mazzarelli would come up huge for Mount Saint Mary off a pass from Jeremy Burgos in the 81st minute to take back the lead. The Mount was able to hold on for the remainder of the half to secure their first conference win this season 3-2 over Purchase.
