YONKERS – The Mount Saint Mary College men’s soccer team dominated offensively in their 2-0 win over Sarah Lawrence College.
Mount Saint Mary entered Saturday with only one win in conference play and needed to win shorthanded yet again as they played without Robert Tansey, a versatile player who can play both striker and center back. The Knights dominated out of the gate, controlling the pace of play for nearly the entirety of the game. In the 26th minute, the Gryphons were able to hold off a barrage of shots from the Knights Liam Hughes and Marco Mazzarelli, stopping three shots on goal in a 14-second span. It was only a matter of time before the Mount got one on the board as they entered the half with nine shots on goal.
They were able to repeat their performance in the first half, only this time, they were able to put one in the back of the net. In the 56th minute, the dynamic duo of Quinn Tynan and Marco Mazzarelli would connect for Mazzarelli’s team-leading 9th goal of the season. No one else on the team has more than three. The Knights continued to bombard the Sarah Lawrence keeper, while also maintaining their defensive formation. Senior goalie Caesar Martinez was kept mostly clean but made the saves when he needed to. Freshman Ryder Esposito made his impact felt tonight when he dished out his first career assist to Ryan Kieser for the Knight’s second goal of the match to make the score 2-0. Mount Saint Mary held their own for the remaining minutes to walk out with a road victory over Sarah Lawrence.
