NEWBURGH – Mount Saint Mary College women’s basketball struggled in their loss to SUNY New Paltz Sunday afternoon.
Mount Saint Mary hosted their first game back from Thanksgiving break against the Hawks of SUNY New Paltz. Things were tight early on as Brianna Guglielmo got the Mount on the board after a steal from Margaret Trinkaus. The Knights led by as many as three points in the first quarter but trailed 18-16 after 10 minutes of play. Things went downhill from here on out, with Mount Saint Mary putting up single-digits in the second quarter, only shooting 21.43% from the field. New Paltz dominated almost every category, winning the points in the paint battle 36-20, points off turnovers 27-12, fast break points 15-2, and what seemed most important, the offensive rebounds 19-8 in favor of the Hawks.
The Knights trailed only 31-24 heading into the third quarter but were unable to get things together in the second half. The teams traded points in the opening minutes until a 9-0 run gave the Hawks a 45-30 lead, forcing a timeout from the Mount. The Knights seemed out of it on an off day from everyone, missing open layups, losing defensive assignments, and turning over the ball. Mount Saint Mary trailed by 19, entering the fourth. The leading scorer on the day, Angelina Donato, was the only Knight to score double-digits as she scored the first bucket for them in the quarter. Mount Saint Mary trailed by as many as 32, ultimately losing to New Paltz 78-52.
