Mount Loses at the Buzzer to Mary Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mount Saint Mary College women’s basketball lost at the buzzer to the University of Mary Washington last Tuesday afternoon.

Mount Saint Mary perhaps played some of their best basketball the day prior against Catholic University, the host of the Jamie Lynn Roberts Holiday Tournament. Now playing three games in four days, the Knights played their final match in Washington, D.C. against Mary Washington. Brianna Guglielmo got off to a good start scoring the first bucket for the Mount, as she had seven points in the first quarter. Two free throws from Casey Love gave the Knights the lead and from there, they led 14-6 after the first ten minutes of play. Both teams struggled to control the ball as they combined for 59 turnovers throughout the game. A switch was flipped as Mary Washington took the lead late in the first half and led 21-19 heading into the break.

The Eagles would lead by as many as 10 in this low scoring affair, but the Knights never continued to battle. Every time the Mount gave an answer to Mary Washington, the Eagles would respond and still led 39-30 after three quarters. After being down 11, Angelina Donato stepped up for the Knights to start the fourth, scoring five straight points for a Mount Saint Mary team that had a tough time scoring. The Mount found success with their full court press and trap defense when the Eagles got into the half court. Numerous caused turnovers allowed the Knights to cut the score to within three after a make from beyond the arc by Lauren Petrie. Mount Saint Mary continued to fight and a huge three pointer from Shannon Phelan with 45 seconds left made the score 47-46 Eagles. The Knights were unable to convert on any of their chances to tie or take the lead, but with five seconds on the clock still had a chance to take it to overtime. A last second three point attempt by Phelan rattled in and out as the Knights suffered a devastating 50-47 loss to Mary Washington.
