Marist Prevails at Iona, Improves to 3-0

NEW ROCHELLE – The Marist men’s basketball team earned a 70-65 victory at Iona in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game on Friday night.

The victory was the sixth straight for the Red Foxes, who now stand at 3-0 in MAAC play for the first time since the 2001-02 season.

First Half
Neither team led by more than three for the first 7:50, and there were six lead changes in that time.

Jackson Price’s three-pointer gave Marist an 18-14 lead, the Red Foxes’ largest lead to that point. Marist led by four on five different occasions in the first half.

The Red Foxes drained six of their first seven three-point attempts. Marist also hit its first 10 free throws.

Iona re-claimed the lead by scoring the final five points of the first half, as Marist was held scoreless for the final 3:17. The Gaels took a 37-36 lead to the locker room.

Second Half
After Price’s three-pointer gave Marist a 40-39 lead, Iona countered with six straight and forced a Marist timeout.

The Red Foxes took the lead back at 46-45 on a driving layup by Josh Pascarelli with 14:04 to go. This was part of an 8-0 Marist run in which Iona was held scoreless for 3:02.

After Biggie Patterson’s three tied the game at 48, the Red Foxes countered with another 8-0 run.

With 9:04 to play, Elijah Lewis’ dunk off a feed from Price gave Marist a 60-51 lead, the Red Foxes’ largest of the game at that point.

Iona cut it to four with two minutes to play, but a layup from Price and dunk by Jaden Daughtry on consecutive possessions ran Marist’s lead to eight with 50 seconds left.

With Marist up three with 11.5 seconds left, Pascarelli hit two free throws to account for the game’s final points.
