NEWBURGH – At its January 27th meeting, the Newburgh City Council unanimously adopted a local law to expand eligibility for its property tax exemption program for individuals with disabilities. This local law will take effect on February 3, 2025, and will expand the current income-based exemption so that more individuals qualify. Individuals must complete an application to verify their eligibility for the exemption, which will then apply to property tax bills in the 2026 taxable year.
Mayor Torrance Harvey: “This City Council is laser-focused on addressing the national housing crisis through decisive local action that drives down costs for our taxpayers, especially for our residents with disabilities that result in reduced earning potential. This dramatic expansion of our property tax exemption for individuals with disabilities will ensure more people qualify for property tax reductions and may increase the amount of the exemption for those already in the program. This City Council will continue fighting for housing justice and affordability for all.”
Individuals with disabilities will qualify for the expanded property tax exemption if they own real property in the City of Newburgh that is used as their primary residence. Exemptions can range between 5% – 50% based on annual income.
The City of Newburgh Assessor’s Office has mailed information letters to those individuals who qualify for the program. For more information, please contact the City Assessor’s Office at (845) 569-7333, or at City Hall, 83 Broadway, Newburgh, NY 12550.
